IELTS Academic Writing

Time: 60 minutes

IELTS Academic Writing has two tasks of 150 and 250 words – both must be completed:

Task One asks you to describe some visual input (graph/table/chart/diagram), by writing a 150-word report describing the information in your own words.

Task Two asks you to write a 250-word essay responding to an argument, a problem or a point of view.

Here are some examples of Task One and Task Two Academic Writing:

Task One: This is a report of at least 150 words written in a neutral semi-formal or academic style.

You may be asked to give details of facts or figures shown in one or more graphs or tables on a connected theme, or you may be given a diagram of a process, a machine or a device which you need to describe You should Include the most important and relevant points from the visual input in your report.

Example:

The chart below gives information about USA car ownership rates between 1970 and 1990.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

NB: You should spend around 20 minutes on this task as it counts for 1/3 of the total writing mark. Write in full sentences in connected text. Do NOT use bullet points or notes in the report – if you do, you will be penalised and a lower mark will be awarded.

Task Two: This is an opinion essay of at least 250 words written in response to instructions that give a point of view, an argument or a specific problem. To discuss the issue, you may have to provide general information, offer and outline a solution, justify an opinion or evaluate ideas.

Read the task carefully and underline the keywords – this will help you keep your answer relevant. Identify the main aspect of the problem and focus on this in your response. You may, for example, be asked to write about the effects of computer games on young people. In this case, don’t just write about computer games but focus on the effects on young people.

Example:

Young people, both boys and girls, would benefit from having to do one year’s compulsory service in the army, navy or air force.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

NB: You should spend around 40 minutes on this task as it counts for 2/3 of the total writing mark
