Ten Top Tips for IELTS Reading

  1. Practise skimming to get the general meaning of the reading passage - this is when you read through the text quickly in order to get an understanding of what it is about
  2. Practise scanning to find specific information in the text - this is when you look for the important details that will help you to answer the questions
  3. Familiarise yourself with the different question types before you take the test so you know what is expected in the answer
  4. Time is limited – do not spend too much time on one passage or question, you only have one hour so try and spend 20 minutes on each text
  5. Write your responses on the answer sheet as you go – unlike the Listening part, you will not have any extra time to do this at the end of the test
  6. If you don’t know the answer, have a guess – especially for multiple choice questions, if you leave a blank you can only score zero
  7. Pay attention to the word limit. For example, ‘write no more than four words,’ and make sure you stick to the stated limit
  8. Don't spend too much time in one passage trying to find some information - if you get stuck on a question, move on to the next question and come back to that one later
  9. Develop your vocabulary before the test to help you spot words of similar or opposite meaning as the questions often use synonyms and antonyms
  10. Accurate grammar and correct spelling are important – you’ll lose marks if you make mistakes with spelling and grammar so identify your common mistakes before you take the test and try and avoid them
